The square dates back to 1784, when Kingston was first laid out as a town, making it one of the oldest continuously operating public markets in Canada. Today it's official name is Springer Market Square. The name was changed in 2008, when the Springer family, a well known family, donated $1 million towards a major redevelopment project in downtown Kingston.
