- Fogo Island, Newfoundland

My personal connection with this painting is not just about this famous and stunning seascape "Joe Batt's Arm" but its also about Fogo Island's fishing community.  

These small flat bottom boats are called “punts” still commonly used in this area for various activities, including fishing and exploring the beautiful coastline.  Although the fishing culture is still considered a significant part of the community's identity and economy, it is nothing like it was 30yrs ago.

In the early 1990s the collapse of the cod fishery caused economic instability and substantial hardship for the community.  Conservation and management efforts have been put into place in an effort to rebuild the stocks and over the years the community has worked hard to adapt to these challenges.  As a result of the measures, the cod stocks have shown some signs of recovery, but the situation remains complex and variable. However, many do find reason for cautious optimism and hope.

It is this message of "hopefulness" to which I reflected upon while painting this sea scape.
